5 Signs Your Home Windows Need Replaced

Here in Pennsylvania, we get ALL the seasons. Very cold winters and very hot summers are both hard on your windows. Not to mention snow, wind, rain, hail and just general wear and tear.

Windows deteriorate over time, not overnight, and it’s often an overlooked issue until you have a real problem on your hands.

At UPG, we’ve helped many homeowners understand window replacement, and we thought we’d breakdown 5 signs your home windows need replaced, based on our expertise.

What Are 5 Signs My Windows Need Replaced

1. Your energy bills are going up, even though you aren’t changing your routine.

PA temperatures can go above 90 degrees in the summer and below zero degrees in the winter. If your windows need to be replaced, you will feel the effects. That cold air that seems to come from nowhere, the ice or water buildup inside your window frame, or your heat or air conditioning continuing to run, never getting to that set temperature. These are all indicators of a problem.

It’s not only costing you money, it’s causing you discomfort in your home. Modern vinyl replacement windows with proper insulation can lower the bills and the stress.

2. Condensation is appearing between double or triple-paned windows.

Condensation may be seeping in due to a faulty seal, and the bad news is, it’s only going to get worse. In PA especially, humidity can really speed this issue up, so it’s important to give us a call to assess.

3. Windows aren’t closing, opening or locking without issue.

When window frames start to warp or foundations settle (as older PA homes often do), they don’t work as expected. Wood will rot if there is too much moisture, as well. Not only is this a safety issue as a means of ventilation or escape, but it’s also a security issue. A window that doesn’t lock is an open invitation for someone to enter your home.

4. Damage you can see and feel.

If you see cracks or breaks in your window, rotting wood frames, peeling paint, or feel soft spots if you push on your window, these are signs you need a replacement window. The freeze-thaw cycle in PA can cause frame cracking and rain can worsen the wood rot. Call us to avoid structural damage and home value loss. Windows (even vinyl ones) only last 20-30 years tops.

5. Noises from outside seem a lot louder than they should.

If you can clearly hear cars, people doing yard work, or your neighbors having a friendly chat, your windows are not working properly. If you want less noise, you might want to replace your old windows with multi-pane windows with proper glazing. The noise reduction will be extremely noticeable.
