What is Ceramic Glass?

Ceramic glass is a clear or tinted product used in high-heat areas where standard glass would shatter from thermal pressures. It may look like regular glass, but it’s actually a transparent ceramic that is designed to withstand high temperatures. Here are the key points when considering ceramic glass for a commercial or residential project.

Pyroceram

There are several brand names for ceramic glass, and the most common is Pyroceram. If you’ve ever used a Corning casserole dish in an oven, you’re familiar with Pyroceram. Back in the 1950s, a furnace malfunctioned at a Corning Glass lab and photosensitive glass was heated to a much higher temperature than expected. The process converted the glass into an extremely durable ceramic that didn’t shatter when dropped. This process has been refined over the years to create transparent or tinted glass-ceramic products that are strong, lightweight, and highly heat resistant.

Where to use Ceramic Glass

Ceramic glass is used when high heat tolerance is needed. This includes glass fireplaces, commercial ovens, cooktops, and furnaces. It also includes industrial chemical facilities, laboratories, and places that require heat insulators or protection from high-heat materials or machinery. It can also be used in architectural lighting design.

Tempered Glass vs Ceramic Glass

Tempered glass is another type of strengthened glass, and it can also be used in residential-sized fireplace doors. However, its temperature threshold is lower than ceramic products. Tempered glass is typically able to withstand constant temperatures up to 470 degrees Fahrenheit. Ceramic glass, on the other hand, can withstand 1200 degrees F or more, depending on the type of ceramic. Some can withstand consistent temperatures as high as 1470 degrees F.

When planning a commercial or industrial facility where ceramic glass is needed, rely on experienced installers like UPG. At these temperatures, ceramic must be installed correctly in order to function as intended. Our expert installers ensure your ceramic glass is installed safely and appropriately to serve you for many years to come. Call us to schedule a consultation today.
